The twice-yearly time change in Spain takes effect Sunday, October 25, 2025, when clocks fall back one hour to mark the shift into winter time. While the adjustment brings more morning daylight, it also means earlier sunsets, leaving drivers to manage dimmer evening conditions.

Claims Spike After Annual Shift

According to data from the British organization Accident Assist, reported collisions increased by 7.8 percent during the two weeks following the 2025 time change. Claims rose from 2,949 in the period before the shift to 3,178 afterward, marking a slight improvement compared to the 11 percent average increase observed annually between 2022 and 2024.

The figures, drawn exclusively from the UK, do not confirm whether the same trend occurs in Spain. However, they highlight the risks tied to reduced daylight and autumn weather conditions, which affect visibility and road safety across regions. The 2025 data reflects a shorter analysis window of two weeks, whereas previous years examined a three-week period, making direct comparisons less precise but still indicative of seasonal patterns.

Seasonal Challenges for Drivers

A survey of 10,500 drivers found that half struggled to see cyclists and pedestrians in typical autumn lighting. More than half believed other motorists failed to use their headlights properly, while 73 percent cited glare from the low sun as their top challenge during fall drives.

Additionally, 40 percent admitted disliking driving in darker mornings and evenings. Rain, slick pavement, and the potential for icy patches as temperatures drop add further complexity to daily commutes during this season.

Safety Tips for Fall Commutes

To reduce risk, drivers should inspect their lights and ensure all bulbs work and lenses remain clean. Restoring yellowed or cloudy plastic covers can improve beam clarity significantly.

Keeping the windshield clear, inside and out, is essential, along with checking wiper blades and topping off washer fluid. Increasing following distance helps account for longer stopping times on wet or icy roads, giving drivers more room to react. In conclusion, by following these tips, drivers can better work through the challenges of fall commutes and stay safe on the road.
