This was one of the earliest examples of illumination being directly built-in into architecture. A notable instance is found on the San Francisco waterfront, where the Maritime Museum constructing, constructed as a public tub in 1937, resembles a ferryboat, with ship railings and rounded corners. New York City’s skyline was radically modified by the Chrysler Building in Manhattan , designed by William Van Alen. It was an enormous seventy-seven-floor tall commercial for Chrysler automobiles. The top was topped by a stainless steel spire, and was ornamented by deco “gargoyles” within the form of stainless-steel radiator cap decorations. The base of the tower, thirty-three stories above the road, was adorned with colourful art deco friezes, and the foyer was adorned with art deco symbols and pictures expressing modernity.
