BMW’s new Alpina-branded sedan, called the Alpina B7, is currently being evaluated on Italy’s Nardo high-speed circuit as the automaker prepares to introduce the vehicle to customers in the target year of 2027. The test programme is intended to confirm that the car meets the performance and refinement expectations set by the brand’s heritage.
Prototype testing at Nardo
Footage released from the latest test run shows the prototype cruising past the 186 mph threshold while maintaining a composed and assured rhythm, a result that aligns with Alpina’s long-standing “speed not sport” philosophy. The video captures the vehicle’s stability on the long straight, demonstrating that the aerodynamic package and chassis tuning are working together as planned.
The machine is equipped with a specially calibrated version of BMW’s twin-turbo V8, and the engineering team is busy refining the engine’s mapping in order to smooth out any irregularities in power delivery. According to the telemetry, the engine now provides maximum torque across almost the entire rev range, which translates into a seamless acceleration experience for occupants.
For reference, the standard BMW 7-series can be ordered with the 4.4-litre S68 twin-turbo V8 found in the M760 xDrive, delivering 562 bhp and 553 lb-ft of torque. By contrast, Alpina’s version is being tuned to offer a broader torque curve while preserving a luxurious feel, a balance that differentiates it from the more aggressively focused M models.
In parallel, the engineers are also concentrating on suspension geometry, seeking a setup that retains the dynamic character expected of a high-performance sedan while still delivering the plush ride quality associated with flagship luxury cars.

Design and exterior cues
Official images unveiled by the brand display a silhouette that mirrors the most recent 7-series limousine, sharing the same roofline contour and the signature lighting elements that identify the series. The visual language therefore signals continuity with the core BMW design while also hinting at Alpina’s unique identity.
The prototype carries bespoke 20-spoke Alpina wheels and a distinctive quad-oval exhaust system, both of which have become hallmarks of the Alpina portfolio. These components not only provide a recognisable look but also contribute to the acoustic character that the brand promises.
Furthermore, the wheel and tyre packages incorporate an additional foam layer beneath the rubber, a detail intended to reduce road-generated noise and to improve overall cabin serenity. This attention to acoustic insulation shows the emphasis on comfort throughout the vehicle’s development.
Brand integration and market strategy
Alpina officially became part of the BMW Group on January 1 2026, when BMW acquired the trademark rights while leaving the remainder of the company independent. This strategic move positions the brand as a low-volume, premium extension of the larger group.
The forthcoming lineup will sit above the most expensive BMW models yet remain below the entry-level offering from Rolls-Royce, thereby targeting a niche segment that commands a high price point. Comparable high-spec trims from other luxury marques, such as certain Range Rover models, often exceed £200,000, indicating the price bracket that BMW hopes to capture with the Alpina B7.

BMW describes the Alpina brand as an exclusive, low-volume operation, a positioning that could help shield it from forthcoming emissions regulations aimed primarily at mass-produced internal-combustion vehicles. By keeping production numbers limited, the company can focus on advanced engineering without the same level of regulatory pressure faced by its mainstream counterparts.
Launch schedule and sales outlook
BMW intends to reveal the Alpina B7 during the first half of the target year, with customer deliveries scheduled for the autumn of that same year. The rollout plan mirrors the approach taken by Rolls-Royce, emphasizing highly personalised options and a bespoke purchasing experience that caters to individual buyer preferences.
Exterior branding will feature the “BMW ALPINA” designation centered on the rear panel, while the traditional crest will receive a monochrome reinterpretation that retains classic throttle-body and crankshaft motifs. These visual cues are designed to reinforce the model’s dual heritage.
Future outlook for the BMW Alpina line
Upcoming Alpina models are expected to occupy an even more upmarket position than previous offerings, with a stronger focus on comfort rather than outright sportiness. The brand will continue to set itself apart from BMW’s M division by emphasizing the “speed not sport” mantra and by providing features such as the renowned Comfort+ driving mode, which tailors the vehicle’s trends for a relaxed yet engaging ride.
