The European market for large, pure 4×4 vehicles is experiencing a significant shift. Denza, the luxury division of BYD, has officially launched in Spain with the commercialization of the Denza Bao 5, a model that combines a brutal and imposing aesthetic with a technical architecture designed to tackle any obstacle in the field, challenging traditional transatlantic vehicles in the category.
The Denza Bao 5’s Technical Specifications
The Denza Bao 5’s secret lies in its mechanical components. Instead of adapting a conventional tourist platform, the brand introduces the DMO (Dual Mode Off-road) hybrid architecture. This technical framework combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with two powerful electric motors, one on each axle. The result is a wild power of 544 CV and 760 Nm of torque, allowing it to catapult its three tons of weight from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds.
The electric part relies on a 31.8 kWh Blade Battery integrated directly into the chassis using Cell-to-Chassis technology. This package allows the vehicle to homologate an autonomy of 90 kilometers in 100% electric mode, sufficient to obtain the CERO badge from the DGT, while the combined range with the gasoline tank reaches up to 835 kilometers. In terms of charging, it accepts up to 11 kW in alternating current and reaches 100 kW in fast DC charging, including the bidirectional V2L system as standard to power external devices with up to 6 kW.
Suspension and Transmission
The Denza Bao 5 incorporates an independent suspension scheme on both axles, adding the sophisticated DiSus-P hydraulic suspension in the Ultimate version. This system analyzes the terrain using twenty sensors and can modify the firmness and vary the ground clearance by up to 140 mm, reaching a maximum distance from the ground of 310 mm with entry and exit angles of 39° and 34° respectively.
The transmission of force relies on three electronic differential locks (front, central, and rear) managed by software to react up to 30 times faster than a conventional mechanical system. The rear electric motor can apply an effective torque to the wheel of 8,000 Nm, ensuring traction in extreme situations through 16 specific driving modes.
Interior and Safety Features
The interior of the Denza Bao 5 offers a purely representative environment, with four digital screens on the dashboard: a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, a generous Head-Up Display, a 15.6-inch central touchscreen with the integrated Google ecosystem, and a dedicated multimedia display for the passenger. The on-board experience is completed with seats featuring a 10-point massage function, ventilation, and heating, a Devialet-signed audio system, two 50 W wireless charging bases, and a central refrigerated compartment capable of regulating the temperature from -6 °C to +50 °C.
In terms of safety, the vehicle’s structure is made of 96% high-strength steel, complemented by 11 airbags and a complete set of driving assistants.
Pricing and Market Strategy
The Denza Bao 5 is available in two well-defined trim levels in the Spanish market. The entry-level Elegance version starts at €76,290, while the top-of-the-line Ultimate version, which adds the DiSus-P hydraulic suspension and electrically deployable side steps, is priced at €86,420. Both versions come with an official warranty of 6 years or 150,000 km for the vehicle and up to 8 years or 250,000 km for the battery.
The launch of the Denza Bao 5 raises the issue of the inertia of the premium segment in Spain. The relationship between price, power, and equipment level is overwhelming compared to its European or American rivals. It remains to be seen if the client traditional of this type of representative 4×4 will be willing to spend over €80,000 on a manufacturer from Asia with recent implantation, where brand prestige often weighs as much as the technical specifications themselves.
