Volvo will launch the EX50, designed to fill the gap between the EX40 and EX60 in its electric lineup. The compact premium SUV coupé targets the competitive market, with its official debut set for next summer.

800V Architecture and 400 kW Charging

The EX50 is built on the SPA3 platform, the same modular architecture used in Volvo’s higher-end models. This platform supports an 800-volt electrical system, enabling DC fast charging up to 400 kW. This feature significantly reduces charging times during long-distance travel.

Various battery options will offer different range levels, with the highest-density pack aiming for approximately 800 kilometers per charge. The vehicle’s length ranges between 4.6 and 4.7 meters, combining SUV coupé styling with ample rear passenger space.

European Production in Slovakia

Production will take place at Volvo’s new electric vehicle plant in Košice, Slovakia. This facility has an annual capacity of up to 250,000 units and will share assembly lines with the Polestar 7 starting in 2028. Manufacturing within the EU reduces logistics and tariff costs, leading to lower dealership prices.

Volvo aims to price the EX50 below £50,000 in the UK, avoiding luxury tax surcharges and appealing to a wider audience. This pricing strategy positions the EX50 below the EX60 while ensuring the continued production of the recently updated EX40.

13 New Models by 2030

The EX50 is part of Volvo’s broader electrification strategy, which includes the introduction of 13 new models by 2030. By 2027, three of these models will be launched: the EX50 for the European market and two variants exclusive to China. Specific launch dates beyond the summer reveal have not been announced.

The aerodynamic design of the EX50 enhances airflow, reducing drag and improving energy efficiency at high speeds.
