The BMW M3 has turned 40, becoming one of the German brand’s most iconic sports cars. The first generation, known as the E30, was launched in 1986 to compete with the Mercedes 190 E 2.3-16. Today, some of its most exclusive versions are reaching high figures at auctions, while BMW is preparing the future electric M3 without giving up on combustion engines.

The BMW M3 story began in 1986, when Motorsport engineers developed a sports version based on the second generation of the 3 Series, known as the E30. Its goal was to compete on circuits, with a model capable of rivaling its German competitors. To achieve this, it featured a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine, known as the S14, with 200 horsepower.

In comparison, the BMW 325i of the time developed 170 horsepower with a six-cylinder inline engine. The first-generation M3 accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and reached 235 km/h. These figures contributed to building its reputation as a reference sports car.

Historic Rivalry

One of the main rivals of the BMW M3 E30 was the Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.3-16, marketed between 1984 and 1988. This sports sedan featured a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine with a 16-valve head developed by Cosworth, delivering 185 horsepower. The rivalry continued with more powerful versions of both models.

The BMW M3 Evolution II increased power to 220 horsepower, reached 243 km/h, and reduced the 0-100 km/h acceleration time to 6.6 seconds. Later, the M3 Sport Evolution increased the displacement to 2.5 liters and developed 238 horsepower. Mercedes responded with the 190 E Evolution II, which delivered 235 horsepower and was linked to the homologation requirements for competing in the championship.

Collectible Value

Manufactured between 1986 and 1991, the first BMW M3 produced 17,086 coupe units and only 786 convertibles. Its exclusivity and sports legacy explain why it remains one of the most desired classics among collectors. Conventional units can be valued between 40,000 and over 130,000 euros, depending on their mileage and condition. Special editions, such as the Ravaglia, Cecotto, Europameister, and Evolution II, can reach between 120,000 and 170,000 euros.

However, the most exceptional versions reach another level. A BMW M3 Sport Evolution with only 4,503 kilometers reached 473,600 euros in an auction.

Future of the BMW M3

While the value of the first generation continues to grow, BMW is preparing a new stage for its sports car. The brand is working on the BMW iM3, a future 100% electric version, which will stand out for its advanced technology. However, fans of traditional engines can rest easy. BMW plans to maintain combustion engines in the next generation of the M3. This strategy aims to combine electrification with the legacy of a model that, four decades after its birth, continues to make history.
