Google has announced that Motion Assist, a feature designed to combat motion sickness while using an Android phone in a car, is now available on all Android devices. This feature uses the phone’s motion sensors to display dots on the screen, indicating how the vehicle is moving, to reduce the difference between what the eyes see and what the body feels.

Motion Assist was previously exclusive to Pixel devices, but it will now be available on any phone running Android 17. However, not all Android phones will receive the update to this new OS version, which could be a limitation.

Google’s Mishaal Rahman explained that Google Play Services must be updated to the latest build to receive the feature, and users must manually enable it from the “Motion Assist” feature in the phone’s settings screen. To activate the automatic mode, you must check the option that reads “Start in a moving vehicle” on your Android phone when you enable the feature.

This means that you won’t need to activate the feature manually every time you ride an Uber or get on the train, as your Android phone can detect vehicle motion and display the visual cues.

Apple has been offering similar functionality on the iPhone for some time, called Vehicle Motion Cues, which works similarly, displaying on-screen cues to help reduce motion sickness while vehicle passengers use their smartphones. Additionally, there are many apps available on the Google Play Store that offer similar functionality, such as KineStop, which supports Android 7 and newer.

Motion Assist is now generally available for devices running Android 17. If you need to use your Android device while riding as a passenger in a vehicle, motion assist can help reduce motion sickness. This feature shows small, subtle visual bubbles along your screen edges.
